Tori Freestone Trio

Playing a mix of original compositions and standard repertoire, this new band is exploring the open quality that the trio format provides whilst taking inspiration from some of the non chord sax led trios of the moment.

Saxophonist Tori Freestone has made a name for herself in a number of bands, turning several critics’ heads as co-leader of Compassionate Dictatorship and contributing significantly to the groups of Ivo Neame, Rory Simmons (Fringe Magnetic) and Andy Sheppard, amongst others.  Recently signed to the prestigious Whirlwind Recordings label, with her own trio Freestone is in her element, with plenty of room to explore both the melodic and rhythmic possibilities afforded her by such a pared down, and notably chord-less set-up.

Her “robust tenor work” (Jazzwise) is well suited to both the standards and originals in the group’s repertoire, and the sense of balance between the three musicians is highly impressive.  Giles and Manington play off each other wonderfully, as well as playfully responding to Freestone’s melodies, and while nothing overly dominates each member is given space that is theirs to fill (or not) as best fits the moment.  It’s a subtle but winning combination and Freestone directs it with great confidence.

“A combination of her drive and that rare ability of seeming to speak through the instrument and control every syllable…beautifully balanced, inventive and quietly complex delivery”
