Mercury join us as part of their two part UK Album tour. Their new album Sea Speak, released earlier this year, introduces a new 5-piece line-up as they welcome keyboardist Richard Jones (Beats and Pieces Big Band). Founded as a quartet by award winning saxophonist/composer Tom Thorp, the bands first album reached critical acclaim in 2013 and saw them short listed for the coveted Peter Whittingham Jazz Award, alongside a barn storming debut tour including appearances at Kings Place, Colston Hall, RNCM and several of the UK’s biggest Jazz festivals.

Paul and Steve have collaborated for over 15 years in a range of ensemble projects. In this intimate duo setting, compositions and improvisations are delivered in their purest form, allowing for the equal co-existence of musical architecture, and deep space. Crossover influences range broadly from Miles Davis to Debussy, from early jazz to celtic folksong, and from world music to free improvisation.

Vittorio Mura Quintet

The second band from the new emerging student bands from the Conservatoire.  Vittorio is a powerhouse sax player with his own set of tunes, supplemented by some well known ones.  He also has surrounded himself with a very strong set of band members drawn from the Conservatoire. Expect original compositions inspired by the jazz tradition, as well as the music of modern saxophonists such as Mark Turner and Walter Smith III.

Chris Gumbley returns to Birmingham Jazz with his tribute to Cannonball Adderley.  Cannonball was closely associated with Miles Davis, in particular the “Kind of Blue” recording – another sea change by Davis.  Gumbley is the best know homage to Cannoball Adderley in the UK today.
