We welcome Tom back to Birmingham Jazz, after the Film Score set, with his new Project. He has added some new players, dedicated to exploring the genius of Duke Ellington and his long-time collaborator Billy Strayhorn. The Project also features one of the UK’s leading singers Cleveland Watkiss making a first appearance for Birmingham Jazz.
The group features an all-star cast of British musicians; each one defined by their unique voices as performers. They work together to not only interpret the music of Ellington, but transmit the joyful spirit of the dance hall music, and Duke Ellington’s legendary stage presence.
This appearance is part of a national tour of this project. The tour was generously sponsored by Arts Council England, with national and regional exposure in the press, including extended coverage on BBC television and Time Out London. Five gigs of the tour, including the project launch at Pizza Express Jazz Club, Dean St were recorded live, with a view to producing and releasing an album of the performances later in 2016.
Line Up: Tom Harrison – Alto Sax; Cleveland Watkiss – Vocals; Robert Mitchell – Piano; Percey Pursglove – Bass and David Lyttle - Drums
