Basil Hodge Quartet
Basil’s interest in music and the piano started at junior school. His quest to become a jazz musician started in earnest when he undertook classical piano lessons from a local teacher for a few years. He then went on to have private lessons with jazz pianist/composer Tim Richards 1986 – 89. He rounded of his training at Goldsmiths College London in 1991. His professional career started in the summer of 1993 as a freelance musician and he steadily rose up the ranks to play with some of the leading UK players such as Jim Mullen, Tony Kofi, Dave O’Higgins and Renato D’Aiello. Tonight they will feature music from has latest recording Point of Reference.
Jazz pianist and composer Basil Hodge has been a mainstay of the British Jazz scene since the early nineties but came to real prominence following the release of his highly acclaimed debut album My Guardian Angel in 2003. A Point of Reference contains eight of Basil's typically well-crafted and varied compositions plus two covers. You will hear the power of the quartet on the track 'Deep Down' the melodic Bossa Nova/ Latin numbers, some funk with the classic Fender Rhodes sound and a couple of trio performances that highlight the delicate and softer side of both Basil's compositions and piano style.
