James Borland & Mentor George Crowley
“Looking Back, Moving Forward”
One of the most in-demand young musicians of the vibrant Birmingham jazz scene, James Borland’s distinctive warm tone and characterful improvising speak both to his love of the jazz tradition, but also the forward-thinking melodicism of contemporary New York figureheads such as Ambrose Akinmusire and Immanuel Wilkins. His quartet brings together an impressive young rhythm section who share his love of free-flowing, exciting jazz music, featuring sought-after bass and drum team Ben Love and Kai Chareunsy, and BBC Young Jazz Musician finalist Nick Manz on piano.
The James Borland Quartet have been playing regularly over the past year developing a strong musical connection and a deep understanding of James’s compositions. For their performance at [insert venue here] they will be joined by tenor saxophonist George Crowley, one of the stars of the London jazz scene. The group will premier an exciting suite of new compositions, ‘Looking Back, Moving Forward’, written especially by James during his time working with George as part of the Jazz Central Mentoring Scheme.
“… Borland again proving himself to be a wonderfully fluent soloist.”-
